Q & A with Monarchs 10th Pick Laura Harper
4/9/2008
| 1) How meaningful is this day for you?: |
Harper:
"This day is something I have been waiting for, for a long time. I think all girls that play basketball have dreams and aspirations to play in the WNBA. Obviously this year it became a more realistic goal. So for the day to finally come, it just feels surreal."
| 2) How excited were you to hear WNBA President Donna Orender announce "With the 10th Pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft the Sacramento Monarchs select Laura Harper"?: |
Harper:
"I dont even think I can describe that in words. I know the caliber of players in this draft class and the type of team Sacramento is and has been. I was about to cry. I had so many emotions going on. I just felt so happy to be in this situation."
| 3) When are you planning to arrive in Sacramento?: |
Harper:
"Im not positive because I have some USA Basketball [opportunities] and thats something really I want to do. So I have to talk to Coach Boucek and find out when Ill be arriving in Sacramento."
| 4) Can you give the fans a scouting report on your game?: |
Harper:
"Im a really passionate player. I'm a power forward. I can shoot, drive and I have strong moves around the basket. I just love to play the game at any expense. [Sacramento] is really going to get the full package."
| 5) You've had some great accomplishments in your basketball career -- winning the NCAA Championship with Maryland in 2006 along with the MOP Award for that Final Four and you won a gold medal with the USA U21 Women's National Team in 2007. What stands out to you as your greatest basketball achievement?: |
Harper:
"Definitely winning the National Championship, because that was the team goal and for me fighting back from injury and having the team come together and win that [was very meaningful]. Its something I'll never forget and that feeling will remain in my heart forever."
| 6) Does your jersey number (15) have any significant meaning to you?: |
Harper:
"Entering college I really liked Swin Cash and her game. And I really liked the number too. So I watched a lot of her in college and when I went [to Maryland] I thought it looked good on me and it was available, so I took it. She [used] to wear it too."
| 7) How much did playing for Coach Brenda Frese and the University of Maryland help you get to this point?: |
Harper:
"Being a Terrapin is everything. The transition from high school to college is what makes or breaks players. I think playing under Coach Frese gave me the confidence to believe that I could take my game to whatever level I want to and it has just helped me grow as a player."
| 8) Who influenced you to play basketball when you were younger?: |
Harper:
"My dad played college basketball and my brother also played. However, when I decided to play, my mom was my biggest supporter and took me all over the world. She helped me see that if I was going to do this, I was going to do it the right way -- [go after it wholeheartedly]."
| 9) Can you tell us about your love for Oreo milkshakes?: |
Harper:
"Its really an obsession. I have a weakness for ice cream. Oreo milkshakes just make me really happy. In high school I used to have one before almost every single game. When I went to college, our strength coach said I wasnt allowed to have one the night before a game, so it really threw me for a loop. [Laughs] But I adjusted and now I try to get a milkshake in my off-time."
