Marilyn (sacramento): Can we expect to see Demya Walker or Kara Lawson in the playoffs???
Joe Maloof: I know Lawson will be ready for tonights game, but I don't think we'll see Walker until the very end of the second round, or if we're lucky enough to get ther, the Finals.
roberto cali: whats good mr maloof so what made u take over the sac town monarchs and who do u think u will play in the finals
Joe Maloof: I love the Monarchs. Gavin and I, when we purchased the Kings, decided to purchase the Monarchs as well. We knew we were getting the finest women's athletes in the world. It is a great sport, a great group of athletes and this is going to be a very successful league. I don't care who we playin the Finals, as long as get there.
Chris (Sacramento): Hello Mr. Maloof. I would like to know why you weren't visible during the WNBA regular season. Will you be more visible during the playoffs? You always go to Kings games but once in a blue moon to the Monarchs regular season games. We appreciate what you do for us and want you to know that although there aren't as many fans as the Kings have, we are still a mighty force when it comes to our girls! Please make the league know that you are a loyal WNBA team owner. Thank you. A Monarch faithful/ 9-year season ticket holder/ Kings Store patron/ Snack stand patron/ Special event patron/ Parking patron for all events
Joe Maloof: Actually, that's a very good point. This year, I think I went to more away games than home games. But, when I can't attend a Monarchs game at ARCO, which has been quite often this year, but I make sure I call a friend in Sacramento and ask him to put the phone to the radio so I can listen to the radio broadcast. I hace actually done that for every single game this year. Another thing, I'm very close to the coaches, I talk to Coach Whisenent before and after every game. I talk to Coach T a lot as well. I need to be more visible and I need to let more people know how much I love this game. It is a very good suggestion and I will try and do that more in the future.
dj sacramento: do you think chances are good for sac obtaing tangela smith again soon i miss her. thanks for your time
Joe Maloof: You never know what players you might have an opportunity to get in the NBA or WNBA. Tangela was a great player for us, a great talent and great in the community. I have to leave those decisions up to Coach Whisenant. Whatever he decides.
Gerald (Philippines): this year is big for the monarchs that clinched the 1st spot in west.. and still many people expect sparks to be champs.. is there any changes from season to playoff games?
Joe Maloof: I think the intensity gets a little greater in the playoffs than the regular season. Defense become a bigger factor in the playoffs. I'm very comfortable with that because our Coach preaches that. We are very capable of winning a title because of the defense we play.
Las Vegas: What are our chances of winning the Championship Joe, and if not where are you going Joe,and if we win will there be a party at your house
Joe Maloof: Well, I think this year our chances are really good. I have a lot of confidence in the coaching staff and the entire Monarchs organization. Yes, there will be a party. Location to be determined, but somewhere in Sacramento.
sacramento: hi joe, just wanted to say that the monarchs are my favorite team and i've been a ticket holder for the last five years, i work with developmentally disabled adults and they attended a game with me and were thrilled when ticha came over to take a picture with them...they are on special olympics and remembered seeing her at an event...they wanted me to ask if she and maybe a couple of the monarchs would come to the school (orange grove adult school) and play a basketball game with them...the kings came a couple years ago to the school and it was magical for them...thanks, kathy v.
Joe Maloof: Thank you for everything that you do, all the wonderful work you do and your organization does. Gavin and I would rather have you bring some of our fans to a playoff game sometime as guests of Gavin's and myself. I'll have my office contact you right away.
Chenequa (New York City): how is nicole powell doing, and in which area do you think she will contribute to most during the playoffs
Joe Maloof: Nicole Powell has been fantastic for our team. I can't believe that we were lucky enough to get her. Tremendous shooter, a great offensive threat from anywhere on the court and I think where she probably can improve a bit is on her defense, but she is continually working on it. We love having her and she is a primary reason for the success we've had so far.
estee (buffalo): hi i'm the monarchs biggest fan. i want to know what do you think about the big season the monarchs have had and what do you think about them winning the title this year.
Joe Maloof: I thank Coach Whis and Coach T and Coach Ambers and Coach Schuman for their excellent efforts this year. We should praise Coach Whis for the offseason work that he did. I feel very, very good about the Monarchs bringing the title to Sacramento. That would be our first ring that Sacramento has ever won outside of indoor soccer.
Craig, Woodinville WA: Hello, My quetion is what team do you see the monarch playing in the second round if they make it that far?
Joe Maloof: I think it will be Seattle. Unfortunately they are playing their best basketball right now and they are the defending champions, so I expect them to rally to the occasion and expect to see them in the Conference Finals against us.
tracy, reno: can you describe the atmoshpere of an wnba playoff game in sacramento?
Joe Maloof: Very loud! Very very loud and exciting. The crowd is intelligent because they understand the game of basketball. The fans are very sophisticated. We are lucky to have them. Such great fans.
kiki, la: what is your relationship with the coaches and players?
Joe Maloof: Our relationship with the players is friendly, respectful and a little professionalism to it. However, you do tend to get close to the players because we have a family atmosphere here with the Monarchs. We treat everyone like they are part of the family, so sometimes you get close, which is fine. Gavin and I are extremely close to Coach Whis. We've known him since the late 1970's when he was the coach at the University of New Mexico. He has a brilliant basketball mind and every team that he has ever coach has won a championship. An example... he has a team in Albuquerque, a team of kids from 12 to 15 years old. His team was an average height of 6-1, beat the New York City team with an average height of about 6-6. He bea tthem with defense. And I always knew that he was a great coach. So the point is... he has won at every level of basketball he has coached in. A champion. He's done a great job.
lindsey, bakersfield joe - did you think the team would finish first in the west coming into the season?
Joe Maloof: You know what, I didn't know what to expect because we had so many new faces this year. We had some key positions that changed, but I knew we had to get better offensively and shooters. That's why we needed Nicole. Yolanda Griffith had an MVP year. In my eyes, she is the MVP. Everything she has done for our team this year makes her the frontrunner in my opinion. Ticha Penicheiro had her best year this year. And they are our two veterans and have been around the longest. That's why we've had such a great year.
jc, spokane: Joe: Do you have a favorite player on the team?
Joe Maloof: No, I like them all the same. I really do. I can't pick. They're all fantastic women, great in our community. Fun to watch them compete. They love the sport and are great role models for kids. I'm very proud to be associated with the WNBA - a great league.
