SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 21, 2003 -- The Sacramento Monarchs today announce that the organization has waived guard, Andrea Nagy and that forward, Cass Bauer-Bilodeau has chosen to retire from professional basketball.

Bauer-Bilodeau, who has played in the WNBA for four seasons and played previously in the ABL, chose to retire due to long-term pain in her right knee. After many years of play, Bauer-Bilodeau suffers from osteo arthritis and will no longer play in the WNBA. Known for her physical style of play, Bauer-Bilodeau took on a key role for the Monarchs in 2002 when her minutes increased substantially, to help replace injured Monarchs forward, Yolanda Griffith. While Bauer-Bilodeau has chosen to end her basketball career, she is a registered nurse and will now focus solely on nursing as her profession.

A 5-7 guard originally from Budapest, Hungary, Andrea Nagy has also been in the WNBA for four seasons and played previously in the ABL. During the 2002 Monarchs season, Nagy orchestrated the Monarchs offense for eight games while starting point guard Ticha Penicheiro was out with a shoulder injury. Ranked third in the WNBA in assists per 40 minutes in 2002 (7.1). She dished out a season-high 11 assists at Cleveland on June 27.

“It is a very difficult day to lose two quality athletes like Cass and Andrea,” said Monarchs General Manager Jerry Reynolds. “We really appreciate the contributions they made to the Monarchs last season, but with only 11 spots available on the roster, we had to make this decision. We wish both of them the best and know they will go on to do good things.”

The Monarchs 2003 roster now stands at 11 players with an average of 3.5 years of WNBA experience. Monarchs guards Ruthie Bolton and Lady Grooms have both been in the league since the inaugural 1997 season. In addition to WNBA experience, the 2003 Monarchs are loaded with extensive international experience at the highest levels.

Both Bolton and forward Yolanda Griffith own Olympic Gold Medals having won in 1996 and 2000, and 2000 respectively. Rookies Chantelle Anderson and Kara Lawson played on the gold medal winning U.S. World University Games team. Known as the “Queen of Basketball” in her native Mali, guard Hamchétou Maïga has been a member of the Mali National Team since 1994.

The Sacramento Monarchs will play their first of 17 home games against the Phoenix Mercury on Opening Night, Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. at ARCO Arena. Sacramento’s regular season will begin on the road on Thursday, May 22, at the Phoenix Mercury at 7 p.m. at America West Arena. Opening Night tickets are going fast and fans are asked to call (916) 419-WNBA for information about tickets.
