Edna's Chat

Campbell
Monarchs fans, Edna Campbell fans, and all who support the cause, here's your exclusive chance to chat with Sacramento Monarchs guard Edna Campbell about the challenges she has faced. Earlier this year, Campbell became the first active WNBA player to be diagnosed with breast cancer, a disease and a cause close to the WNBA family. Throughout the 2002 season, Edna's strength and courage have been an inspiration to all, including her Monarchs teammates.

If you missed the live chat, here's your chance to read about what Edna had to say about the Monarchs, Breast Cancer, what you can do to help the cause and more.

Kim, Sacramento: Edna you've been on the bench with the team for nearly every game. What, if anything, new have you learned about the game from your new vantage point?

Edna Campbell: It is true that you have a totally different perspective from the bench. I've learned that I can also support my team from the bench. That's most important for me right now is to feel a part of my team.

Brandon, NC: How can the Monarchs bounce back from their shakey start in the first half of the season?

Edna Campbell: We need to get some people off of the IR. Yo and Ticha will be rejoining the team within the next week or so. That's the first thing, the next is to play with confidence and play hard and to give ourselves a chance. Our team is confident and unified, we just need to turn the corner and believe in ourselves.

janet, Sacramento: Edna you've said you'd like to come back this season. Is that still your plan? And secondly, what have you been doing to stay in "basketball shape"?

Edna Campbell: Coming back this season is a bridge I have to cross as I continue with radiation to see how I'm feeling physically, mentally, and hopefully my team will turn around and make a playoffs push to give me that opportunity.

Katy (Waco, Texas) : Hey Edna! I just wanted to tell you what a brave and courageous role model you have been. I am 23 and in May I found a small lump in one of my breast. I was very scared because I had no idea if it was serious. I immediately thought of you and your fight with breast cancer and then I made a doctor's appointment. Fortunately it turned out to be only a cyst. But I would have never had the courage to have gone to the doctor if I hadn't have heard your story. So thank you very much for being so open and honest about your situation. You are truly a hero and you are helping more people than you could ever imagine! God bless you and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Edna Campbell: Thank you, Katy. I'm glad to hear that it was nothing serious. I really appreciate your words of support, encouragement and admiration. You, too, are an inspiratioin to me.

Sue (Sacramento): Hi Edna - What do you think women need to do to catch this killer early enough that their chances of a complete recovery are 90 to 100 % ?

Edna Campbell: Self-examinations, clinical exams, and mammograms. As we stated, there is no prevention and that's the only way to try to detect breast cancer early.

HW and LR , New York and Oxnard: Edna has your perpective on basketball changed ince your diagnosis? If so, how?

Edna Campbell: Without a doubt. Basketball is definitely not the central theme in Edna's life at this point in time. I'm thankful for this experience because I've learned a lot, I've grown a lot and I've extended myself in a direction in my life toward the things which are most important to me. My family, my friends, etc.

Gerri, Sacramento: Edna, it must be tough for your son to watch you fight breast cancer. How is he doing? And, what advice can you give kids (of all ages) to help them deal with a mother who is undergoing cancer treatment?

Edna Campbell: My son is doing great. The initial shock threw him into a tailspin, but he has been just as courageous as I've had to be. I would advise young people to be supportive, to be positive, and the same advice goes to the parents to be strong and to be that pillar of strength for their children as well.

Sharde (Virgina): Hi Enda! How are you feeling? What do you have to do to get back healthy and how is the treatment going? Get Well Soon!!

Edna Campbell: Treatment is going very well. I finished chemotherapy and moved onto radiation. I'm feeling great. Thank you.

Barry (Columbus): Lisa Leslie has done a lot of commercials for the WNBA, Sears, and Breast Health Awareness. Will you be doing commercials about the importance of mammography and early detection?

Edna Campbell: I will do whatever is asked of me to generate awareness and to support breast cancer causes.

Sarah-Indiana: Who is the funiiest player on the Monarchs?

Edna Campbell: Funniest player is Lady Grooms. She is just fun to be around. She turns everything into a comedy show.

tammy- ky: Besides Arco Arena, Where do you like to play the most?

Edna Campbell: Los Angeles, then New York. LA because of the rivalry and New York is a packed facility and it's great to play in front of that many fans.

Pittsburgh: Edna, Do you have any plans to write a book about your experience with breast cancer? Keep the faith! JD in Pittsburgh

Edna Campbell: I would like to recap my experience but there's a time for everything and right now I feel like I'm too young to write a book.

Hey Janet!

Edward Leon Killian: Hi Edna Where were you raised in Pittsburgh area? Where do you live now? Pittsburgh?

Edna Campbell: I grew up in Point Breeze and I live in Sacramento now.

Ben, Nashville: First and foremost, I admire your courage in still involving yourself with basketball. Most people would walk away from it but you display immeasurable courage every time I see you on the Monarchs bench. Your team reminds me of the Sacramento Kings with all its scorers. If you can relate to my previous statement, whose game most resembles yours and why?

Edna Campbell: Thank you for the compliment on the courage in being able to support my team, but that has been a distraction to me. I like to keep involved in what I like to do. I really can't come up with a King that I play with.

I'd have to say a combination between Bobby (Jackson) and (Mike) Bibby.

Phil, Sacto: Edna, who is your support system? Family? Friends? Any WNBA players?

Edna Campbell: A combination of all three. There have been a tremendous number of people who have been with me along this journey. It's been a combination of my family, my friends, and my friends that happen to be WNBA players.

Cee(Sacramento) If you are not able to play this season, how will we find out about your health and how you are doing in the off season?

Edna Campbell: The Monarchs will keep everyone posted through our web page. Also, sign up on the Monarchs for Close Up to receive news direct from us.

Edna Campbell: I just want to thank everyone out there for their support, for their love and encouragement. You all have made my experience a lot more bearable, a lot less painful, have kept me smiling and I really appreciate everyone more than I can say.

Moderator: The Monarchs' Breast Health Awareness night will occur on Sunday, July 21st as Sacramento hosts Orlando. Come out and support the cause, support Edna, and buy your own special Edna Campbell Breast Health Awareness pin to show your support for she and the cause. Proceeds will go to benefit breast cancer research.
