The fifth overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Dispersal Draft, veteran forward
DeMya Walker is a welcome addition to the Sacramento Monarchs. However, this former Portland Fire standout has some adjusting to do. She had a breakout season last year, in just her third WNBA season, starting 29 of 31 games while leading the Fire in both scoring (10.9 ppg) and rebounding (5.0 rpg). Now, with the Monarchs, she is finding she has a different role other than team leader.
“I need to find that sixth man mentality again,” says Walker. “Minutes are not an issue. We are a championship contender with a lot of depth on our team.” However, production is an issue for this 6-4 enthusiast. “I have to work that much harder to be productive. Stats show your production. Coming off the bench now, I have to prove myself that much more,” states Walker.
Regardless of her new role Walker is happy to be with the Monarchs. “It’s different here and exciting,” voices Walker. “I like the way the team is set up. Back in Portland I found that good friendships equals good chemistry on the court. I thought that I would miss that, but I don’t have to. I already knew some of the players like
Tangela {Smith},
Lady {Grooms},
Ticha {Penicheiro}, and the rookies, so I wasn’t walking in blind. Everyone is nice and gets along here. There’s good chemistry and a great atmosphere.”
Fellow Monarchs forward
Yolanda Griffith has helped Walker adjust to the team as well. “Griffith’s intensity about basketball makes you want to dig deeper,” explains Walker. “My prize possession is to be able to pick her brain. I get free advice from a player who is the best in the world at her position.” Walker adds, “Her advice is helpful, not nagging, I’ll be the better for it.”
Overall, Walker’s move to Sacramento is a good one. “We are playoff bound and will be a championship contender,” declared Walker. “I’ve been working hard, but I’m not off on the right foot yet. I’ve had some nagging injuries to deal with. I just have to keep the faith and a positive mental attitude. I’m here (in Sacramento) for a reason. I’m a difference maker. This is a great experience and I’m going to be better for it. That makes everything easier to swallow.”
