In Her Own Words – A Kara Lawson Update
I’ll tell you what; it has been an absolute whirlwind this past month. I would not trade the insane schedule for anything though because I’ve had a blast. I started off February by taking my LSAT. It was a challenging exam. I received my results back already, but I cannot let you know how I did because I never tell anyone what my grades are, usually they are pretty good.

The day after taking my LSAT I flew out to Los Angeles for the NBA All-Star Game, plus the accompanying festivities. I had a great time. It was good to catch up with a bunch of the other WNBA players that made the trip out, as well as meet tons of interesting people. We had camps, clinics and “Read to Achieve” events all week out in the community. Interacting with the kids and sharing the importance of reading and fundamental basketball skills was one of my favorite moments. I also spent a lot of time at Jam Session. I wish I could have spent more time there just trying all of the games they had set up. I read books, coached games, signed autographs, and snuck in some video game playing too.

There were two events that I gained a lot of knowledge from. The first was the Technology Summit, which is put on by the NBA every year during All-Star week. Basically, they bring in some of the leading experts in various fields and have them discuss current issues on panels of about 10 people with a moderator. It was amazing to see so many powerful people in one room, some of America’s most successful businessmen and businesswomen. Larry King from CNN was one of the moderators, while some of the top companies were represented, i.e. McDonalds, Brand Jordan, ESPN, Ticketmaster, American Express and many more. The second event I really enjoyed was the Newsmaker Breakfast. The keynote speaker was former Secretary of State, Madeline Albright. She is such an impressive woman. She spoke on many issues and then opened the floor to the audience for questions. She touched on the upcoming election, the war in Iraq, President Bush and North Korea.

Finally, we made it to All-Star weekend. I went to all of the events, the Rookie Challenge, All-Star Saturday night, and the actual All-Star game. They were fun, but I thought All-Star Saturday night could have been a lot better. The dunk contest was terrible. I was mad that Peja didn’t win the three-point contest too. The actual All-Star game was very competitive in the fourth quarter. I thought the West would end up winning and they did.

By the time I returned home, I was so tired. I did not get enough sleep at all that week. The big thing at All-Star weekend was seeing and meeting all kinds of stars. Man, it seemed like every time I turned around somebody new that I had never met before was walking by. Being a huge basketball fan, it was cool for me to meet a lot of the NBA Legends. I met Dr. J, Charles Barkley, Oscar Robertson, and a bunch of other guys who helped make the NBA the great thing it is today. I liked meeting the current players as well, but I was more excited to meet the establishers.

Sorry to cut this short, but I need get my workout in for the day. Training camp is almost here. Talk to you soon.
