A visit to the California State Fair often includes an exhilarating ride on the Ferris wheel, sampling fried food, petting the adorable livestock and enjoying the creativity of the county exhibits. All those classic options, however, were outdone on Friday.

Sacramento Monarchs players Rebekkah Brunson and Kim Smith treated fair-goers to delicious desserts, while Chelsea Newton and DeMya Walker broadcast the local weather to a live audience.

The Monarchs teamed with partners News10 and BerryFactory.com to provide unique opportunities for fans to interact with the players.

“We’re doing live weather out here every day with (News10 weather reporter) Patty Souza, and taking photos on the weather wall,” explained Jodie Moreno, News10 promotions and event director. “Today’s a treat, as our fair patrons can take photos with two very famous Monarchs players.”

Along with enjoying the many interactive features of the News10 booth, fair-goers were entitled to autographs from the players and hearty conversation.

“They’re just great fans,” Newton said smiling. “They support us, come out to events like this, they’re always there and make us feel wanted, so I just enjoy being out here with them.”

“I love hearing them talk about everything they see at the fair,” Walker added. “I just enjoy having conversations with them.”

When it comes to their personal fair experiences, Newton and Walker enjoy different aspects.

“I’ve always been a food person at the fair,” Newton said. “I’m a funnel cake eater, along with cotton candy and caramel apples. It’s just fun to see everyone having a good time, with all the fans out and enjoying themselves.”

“I’m a roller coaster junkie, so I love being able to go on the roller coasters,” Walker said grinning. “I also like trying to beat the basketball games, because I know there’s a trick."

Meanwhile, at the BerryFactory.com booth, fair-goers stepped up to order their succulent sweet treats and received exceptional service from two special berry servers.

Brunson and Smith took turns decorating and serving several of (BerryFactory.com owner and founder) Shari Fitzpatrick’s delectable delights. The two forwards enjoyed drizzling the juicy berries and fruits with an assortment of melted chocolates, frosting and other sweet garnishes.

“We have purple berries today at the State Fair to honor our Monarchs players and our sponsorship with the Maloofs,” Fitzpatrick said. “We’ve got white, dark and milk chocolate. I tell everyone to pick their own poison! Plus, for the health conscious, our chocolate dipped strawberries are fat-free.”

The fair-goers, however, weren’t the only people enjoying Fitzpatrick's treats. Brunson and Smith couldn't resist sampling the sweets.

“My favorite part has been eating the strawberries,” said Smith. “The fair’s always a lot of fun. There’s always a whole bunch of people around, great food and good times.”

“I’m a huge, huge apple pie eater,” Brunson said. “They have the chocolate covered apple with the white chocolate on it. It also has caramel and cinnamon on it. It tastes just like apple pie. It’s amazing!”

At the end of the day, the fun shared by the Monarchs, News10, BerryFactory.com and fair-goers left lasting memories in the minds of all involved.

“I think it’s good to be able to come out here and interact with the people, let them know that we’re part of the community,” Brunson said. “It’s a good opportunity to come out here and reach out to them, and also a good opportunity to be with the sponsors, and let them know that we do appreciate everything they do for us.”
