Having Fun, Getting Fit

By Andrew Nicholson

Monarchs players Laura Harper and Crystal Kelly, along with assistant coach Monique Ambers, hosted the Monarchs Fit Clinic in partnership with SIMS Recycling Solutions, University of Phoenix and adidas, at Barbara Comstock Morse Elementary on Thursday.

Along with students from Barbara Comstock Morse Elementary, 15 boys and girls from Boys & Girls Club of Sacramento participated in the clinic that focused on providing the positive benefits of exercise, good nutrition and a positive attitude.

"We hear about all the negative things in the media about (kids' lack of) fitness, and the video game syndrome these days," University of Phoenix Director of Gateway Oaks Learning Center Lee Davis said. "We want to make sure we're helping the kids get out, and this is a great experience for them. They can tie this into their health, and it ties into their education as well."

The youth were also educated on the positive impact recycling has on the environment.

"For every cell phone we recycle today, or for every cell phone the school collects throughout the year, we will make a donation to the cause of choice for the school," SIMS Recycling Solutions Account Executive Dianna Sorby said. "So we're an electronic recycling company and that's why we're here, we're teaching the kids about the environment."

WNBA players continue to be positive role models for all of their fans. The League and its teams create and implement programs that support healthy lifestyles and positive self-images.

"It's fun," Ambers said smiling. "The little kids are so impressionable, it's good to work with people when they want to listen and want to learn."

"I had a lot of fun and I broke a sweat, which I wasn't planning on doing," Kelly added with a laugh. "I had the ab station. They had a lot of fun, and I think they learned some stuff too!"

The Monarchs Fit Clinic is one of many community events the Monarchs are hosting during the WNBA's month-long recess in observation of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
