The Monarchs look to gain ground against the Silver Stars as the two Western Conference powerhouses clash tonight!

1) Sacramento (12-8) battles San Antonio (13-6) in their first game since the All-Star Break. The Monarchs sit just 1.5 games back of the Silver Stars for first place in the West.

2) It’s been nearly a month and a half since these two teams tipped-off at ARCO Arena. Sacramento controlled the last contest, winning 74-57. As we’ve grown accustomed to this season, Rebekkah Brunson led the Monarchs dominate outing. The Monarchs power forward scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed nine boards.

3)With only a month left in the season, there is less room for error. The Monarchs know that every game will be crucial from here on out.

“It’s the second half of the season and every game is a must win for us,” said Monarchs forward Rebbekkah Brunson. “We have to be ready to play every night and we have to start that as soon as possible.”

4) The Monarchs will focus their defensive attention on the Silver Stars veteran Becky Hammon. The All-Star guard is leading the Stars with 19.4 points per game. Facing a talented player like Hammon draws the attention of all Monarchs defenders.

“It’s probably a team effort,” Ticha Penicheiro explained. “I think it’s very hard (to defend her) because San Antonio’s offense runs through Becky. She’s a great player because she has so many weapons.”

5) San Antonio has been on fire over the last month. In addition to winning eight of their last 10 games, the Silver Stars are also riding a five-game winning streak.

Closing thought…
In only her second year, two-time All-Star Sophia Young has become a potent all-around presence for the Silver Stars. She is the Silver Stars second leading scorer averaging 15.3 points per game. Adrian Williams recently commented on the challenge Young poses for the Monarchs.

“She’s a great rebounder, has good post moves, and is only in her second year. She’s only going to improve,” Williams said. “But we have the experience on this team. And usually age and experience comes out on top.”
