The Monarchs square off with the Comets at Strahan Coliseum in their regular season finale. Sacramento held ground in their previous matchup, beating Houston 80-65. Nicole Powell led the Monarchs with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Shannon Johnson (12 points) and Tina Thompson (12 points) combined for 24 points to pace the Comets.

Get ready for the Monarchs final regular season contest with Kara Lawson in the GameDay Q&A.

Kara Lawson

Kara Lawson What have you learned from your previous games against the Comets this season?
"I think the first thing when you play Houston is you have to pay some extra attention to Tina (Thompson). (You have to) know where she is, and just try not to let her get rolling through the course of the game. Shes one of those players in our League that can take over a game and almost win it single-handedly. Theyre a great rebounding team so we really try to limit their second chance opportunities. Their strong point on offense is their athleticism and their ability to penetrate. So were really focused defensively, just keeping them in front, forcing them into contested jump shots. They dont have a ton of shooters on their team, so we're just trying to keep their athleticism in front of us on the defensive end."

Facing Tina Thompson tonight, what's it like playing against someone you were Olympic teammates with just a few weeks ago?
"Its not too much different. Weve been opponents much longer than weve been teammates, so Im used to playing against her. I had a lot of fun playing with her. Shes such a great player to play with because of her versatility. She can shoot the 3-point shot as well as any player in the WNBA. She can put it on the floor. She has a lot of post moves. I feel like I know her game a little bit better having played with her. So Im just trying to pass along some of that insight to my teammates that will be guarding her, and hopefully that can help us out defensively."

How would you compare the team's chemistry from the beginning of the season to now?
"I think its grown. Weve grown together as a group, and weve gotten closer. I think we understand one another and how to play with each other. I think its grown as weve improved as a team. I think our rookies have been a big sparkplug for us this year. Theyre huge to our chemistry, just with the energy that they bring."

With your Playoff spot already secured, what's the focus of this game?
"Just improvement. Thats the main thing Coach talked about today. Weve been in the Playoffs six straight years, so we know that a huge key to succeeding in the Playoffs is entering the Playoffs playing well. We dont want to go (to Houston) and just not care about the game and not give a good effort, because how well we (finish the regular season) can directly impact how well we play in our Playoff series."

How important is it to go into the Playoffs on a winning streak?
"I think its important to go into the Playoffs feeling good about yourself, and feeling good about where you are. Sometimes thats wins, and sometimes thats just having confidence in your system, your teammates and in the way youre playing. You can play a great game and still lose sometimes. And you can win a game and not play as well as you wanted to. For us, we want to be playing the type of basketball, living up to our potential in these last two games heading in."
