The Monarchs visit the Mercury at US Airways Center in their only visit to the Valley of the Sun in the regular season. In their previous matchup at ARCO Arena, the Monarchs toppled the Mercury 83-74 to take a 2-0 season series lead. Rebekkah Brunson led Sacramento with 18 points, while Cappie Pondexter notched 23 points for Phoenix.

Get ready for the Monarchs first game of September with Chelsea Newton in the GameDay Q&A.

Chelsea Newton

Chelsea Newton Where do you think Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi rank in terms of all-time great WNBA duos?
"I think probably the only other duo you can compare to them is Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes, just in how dynamic they are when it comes to scoring. They won the Championship last year so you have to consider them as one of the greatest."

What kind of influence has Phoenix’s offensive style had on the WNBA?
"Now you have to compete more with scorers, so it’s not just a grind it out type of game. You see a lot of scorers coming into the league. A lot of GMs are going after people that can just get it done and score. They’ve transformed the League. If you can’t run with them, you can’t play with them at all. So, some of us have had to conform to what they do a little bit because we even had our highest scoring game when we played them. We scored 100 points the first time we played them. It’s probably unheard of for us, but you have to be able to keep up with a team like that."

How does the Monarchs up-tempo offense compare to the Mercury's offense?
"I think that we play really well together. Our whole objective is to run and use each other, read each other and make the extra pass. They’re more of a one-pass-take-a-shot team. We just want to work it and work it and have fun. We’re fast too, but not as fast as them of course."

Have you noticed a difference in Kara Lawson since she came back from the Olympics?
"Kara's someone who just adjusts to wherever she is or whatever she does. She knows her roles. She’s come back, and it’s just so great to have her back because she has a wittiness about her that’s really funny. She brings her stories from the Olympics and just everything. She just keeps trying to feed us knowledge from everything that she’s gained from being over in Beijing. She’s come back and she’s as smart as ever. The same exact Kara that left before, but with a gold medal!"

What was the focus at practice this week?
"Just doing what we do. And that’s work on our defense, work on our offense. We focused on ourselves a lot this week and just cleaning up the little things we needed to work on. We kept Phoenix on our mind a little bit but more so, we just took care of ourselves."
