An Eye for Design

Written by Andrew Nicholson
September 9, 2008

i-design shooting jerseyEvery gameday the Sacramento Monarchs put their shooting shirts on to warm up for the impending contest. Facing the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, the Monarchs shooting shirts were noticeably different. That's because Monarchs MVP Marlayna Autrey designed them.

A stay-at-home mother of three, Autrey has always had an eye for original design. In high school, she designed posters for her school's musicals and took graphic design classes. She then took her creativity to a performing arts school, and has practiced graphic design in her spare time ever since.

While browsing SacramentoMonarchs.com, Autrey came across the adidas WNBA i-design contest and decided to take a shot at designing her favorite team's shooting shirt.

After coming up with four different concepts, Autrey decided on the winning design, named the Monarchs Swirl, with a simple idea in mind.

"I wanted something pretty, something I’d wear," Autrey said smiling. "And I wanted something that was a little more feminine."

Her design enhances the Monarchs normal shooting shirt with a vibrant magenta swirl that almost looks like an abstract Monarchs secondary logo.

Autrey became a Monarchs MVP "a couple years ago," after her aunts took her to her first game in 2003. And like many Monarchs MVPs, her favorite memory was witnessing Sacramento's first WNBA Championship in 2005 at ARCO Arena.

But, after seeing her adidas WNBA i-design shooting shirt on sale in the Sacramento Team Store, as well as her favorite players wearing them to warm up for the game with Playoff implications, Autrey admits, winning the i-design contest may rival the Championship memory.

"It's probably just about the same," Autrey exclaimed, as her children looked on. "It's so exciting!"

As Autrey and her family watched from section 121, the Monarchs went on to clinch a Playoff berth for a League-leading sixth consecutive season.

"They might be lucky the way that game ended," Crystal Kelly said exuberantly, as her teammates celebrated in the locker room. "It's nice to switch it up."

"It’s pretty cool," Monarchs rookie point guard A'Quonesia Franklin added, while wearing the shooting shirt. "It’s different. It looks like someone used (a program on) their computer and made a cute design. I like it."

In addition to Autrey's shirt being sported by the Monarchs players, Autrey also received two complimentary tickets to the game, a Monarchs autographed version of the shooting shirt she designed and an adidas prize pack.

While Autrey won the i-design contest in Sacramento, each WNBA team had a winner of their own. To see the rest of the other WNBA teams' winning designs, or for more information on the adidas WNBA i-design contest, log onto www.wnba.com/idesign.
