BOLTON VS. ELLIOTT: BATTLE FOR THE AGES

Written by Alexander Sigua

Monarchs vs. Sparks.

Ali vs. Frazier.

Magic vs. Bird.

One of the most exciting elements in sports is when two rivals battle each other and bring out the best in both competitors.

That’s exactly what happened on Wednesday morning as former Monarchs guard Ruthie Bolton was challenged by the mighty Dan Elliott, of “News10 Good Morning.”

After years of tough talking between the two athletes, and because of the excitement of the 2008 WNBA Playoffs, Bolton and Elliott brought all they had to the hardwood to decide who would come out on top.

The rules were simple. Play to 11, shots counted as one point and two points, alternate possession.

There was a stark contrast in each competitor’s preparation for this game. Bolton rises at the break of dawn each morning, ensuring enough time to maintain her daily workout regimen.

Elliott took a different approach.

“My strategy was not to bathe for the past three days,” revealed Elliott. “On the way to the arena this morning, I also ate some onions. I want to make sure she stays as far away from me as possible.”

As the game tipped off, Bolton started with a commanding 4-1 lead, taking Elliott to the basket and draining outside jump shots with ease. However, as every great matchup plays out, the edge doesn’t last for long. Elliott’s fundamental footwork and picture perfect jump shot narrowed the gap and tied the game at 6-6.

The seesaw battle continued as Bolton and Elliott traded jump shots on each other, fought for every rebound and displayed some artistic moves under the basket. In the end, Bolton’s speed prevailed as she finished the memorable game with a layup, final score: 11-9.

After the game, the mutual respect between both competitors was evident.

“I did break a sweat and had to really dig deep a little bit,” said Bolton. “If you make me dig deep, you’re doing something.”

“I knew that she was strong, but what I had no idea of, was how quick she is,” said Elliott. “She’s not just strong, she is fast. A couple times I went down low, and she was on my left, then the next thing I know she’s on my right and stole the ball. You have to have a swivel head to play against her.”

“He has some nice weapons,” stated Bolton. “There’s more behind those good looks and that smile. He’s got some basketball skills.”
