On Friday, March 1,
Ruthie Bolton of the Sacramento Monarchs visited the UC Davis Medical Center Children's Hospital to celebrate "Read Across America" Day. Bolton spent the morning reading with youth who are hospitalized at both the UC Davis Children's Hospital and Shriner's Hospital. All of these children are unable to attend school outside of the hospitals, but are currently participating in the hospital's school program.
Bolton had the opportunity to share her book of choice, "Oh the Places You Will Go," by Dr. Seuss. After she finished, the kids took some time to read Bolton a book of their own. The kids also had a chance to ask Bolton some questions and to play with her in the pediatric unit's playroom. At the end of the reading session, each child received an autographed book from Bolton.
In celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2, schools across America invited volunteers, mentors and celebrities to read to students as part of "Read Across America" Day. Read Across America Day was created to emphasize the importance of reading as a daily habit.
