National Girls and Women Sports Day

As part of National Girls and Women Sports Day (NGWSD) on February 6, Monarchs Guard Ruthie Bolton visited Hubert H. Bancroft Elementary School in Sacramento to celebrate. Bolton visited with more than 60 elementary school girls, ranging from grades four through six, on the importance of athletics and her experience as a professional and Olympic athlete.

During Bolton's one hour visit, students had the opportunity to participate in a game of "knock-out" and an interactive question and answer session with Bolton. During her presentation, Bolton was joined by Pam Courtney, a teacher at Bancroft Elementary School. Courtney had aspirations of participating in the Olympics before an accident paralyzed her from the waist down. Now, she serves as an inspiration for everyone she comes in contact with. Courtney recently carried the Olympic Torch when it traveled through Sacramento during the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay.

As part of an ongoing effort to inspire and empower girls and women to reach for their dreams, The Sacramento Monarchs have celebrated NGWSD for the past three years. NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states, with community-based events, awards, ceremonies and other activities that honor the achievements of girls and women in sports.
