Mercury Sign Veteran Olympia Scott
PHOENIX – The 2007 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury have signed Olympia Scott, a member of the team’s championship squad and two-time WNBA champion, for the remainder of the 2008 season, the club announced today.
The 6-2 forward/center played a crucial role as a vocal veteran leader in the Mercury’s championship run. Last season, her first in Phoenix, she appeared in eight games for the club.
“We are excited to bring Olympia Scott back to Phoenix for the rest of the season to help us down the playoff stretch,” said Mercury General Manager Ann Meyers Drysdale. “Her leadership was instrumental in our memorable run to the championship last season.”
“I’m excited to be back in Phoenix and I know that I can be a contributor on this team as a veteran leader,” said Scott. “I am confident that we can finish the regular season on a strong note and make a run towards the postseason to defend last year’s championship.”
Scott, in her tenth year in the WNBA, has played for six different teams in her career and is the only player in league history to win a championship with two different teams (2005 Sacramento Monarchs, 2007 Phoenix Mercury). She owns career averages of 4.8 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game.
The Mercury continue team workouts and practices during the month-long hiatus before playing host to the San Antonio Silver Stars on August 28 at 7 p.m. for Back to School night. That matchup will be broadcast on FSN Arizona. Tickets are on sale for the Mercury’s four remaining home games. Lower level tickets start at $10.
