Phoenix Mercury Re-Signs Andrea Riley
The Phoenix Mercury has re-signed guard Andrea Riley, the club announced today. Riley gives the Mercury 10 available players due to the season-ending injury of Penny Taylor (torn left anterior cruciate ligament) and the strained left hip flexor that has Diana Taurasi out indefinitely. League rules allow for an exemption to the 11-player roster limit if a team falls below 10 players due to injury for an extended period of time.
Riley was originally acquired by the Mercury on January 12 in a trade that sent Temeka Johnson to the Tulsa Shock, but was then waived on May 16, the final day of training camp. The 5-5 point guard recorded 10 points and six assists in her one preseason game with Phoenix.
Riley will be available for the Mercury’s home game Sunday against the Tulsa Shock, whom she played 33 games with in 2011 averaging 6.0 points and 1.8 assists. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.
