The Phoenix Mercury today announced the selection of Ali Vincent of Mesa, winner of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” as the 2008 Woman of Inspiration. Vincent became the first female to win the competition after losing 112 pounds and 47.86 percent of her body weight during the six-month run of the show’s fifth season.
Vincent will be honored with the award on Friday, Sept. 5 during an in-game presentation as part of the team’s Inspiring Women Night when the Mercury takes on the Sacramento Monarchs. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at US Airways Center.
“I am honored the Mercury selected me as the team’s Inspiring Woman of the Year. I have always been a fan of the WNBA and as an Arizona native, I’ve supported the Mercury since day one,” said Vincent. “I admire the courage of these world-class athletes who, through their commitment and drive, are paving the way for equal recognition for the girls who will play after them. WNBA players embody the motto that led me to victory on ‘The Biggest Loser.’ If you can dream it and put hard work behind it, you can be it.”
In addition, Vincent will captain the Mercury’s team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K run/walk on Oct. 12, benefitting the Susan G. Komen For the Cure foundation. Fans can join the Mercury’s team. Registration is $25 and includes a special Phoenix Mercury T-shirt.
Fans can also follow a training regimen and receive tips from Vincent as she blogs about her training progress.
For the second year, the Phoenix Mercury is acknowledging women who inspire others through their commitment and dedication to work, family and community. Last season, the team honored Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
