Mercury Announce Preseason Schedule
The Phoenix Mercury today announced its preseason schedule for the 2012 season, featuring a matchup with the Japanese National Team on Tuesday, May 8. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at US Airways Center.
The game will be played during the second week of training camp, which opens on April 29, in preparation for the season opener against the defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx on May 20 at 9:30 a.m. Phoenix time. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.
The Mercury will make its regular season home debut on Saturday, May 26 against the Los Angeles Sparks, who own the first pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at US Airways Center.
The Japanese National Team will also face the Sparks during the WNBA preseason on May 10. In addition, the Sparks will host the Chinese National Team in a growing international relationship for the league.
Last spring the Atlanta Dream participated in the first WNBA game played in Europe, when it visited the Great Britain National Team at Manchester Evening News Arena and posted an 82-51 victory on May 29; the Mercury hosted the JX Sunflowers, defending champions of the Women's Japan Basketball League and notched a 96-52 victory on May 24. Additionally, four WNBA teams hosted games or scrimmages against the Chinese National Team during the preseason. In 2010, the Sparks, Mercury, and San Antonio Silver Stars hosted the Chinese National Team, and the Connecticut Sun welcomed the Poland Women’s National Basketball Team.
