Cappie Pondexter Undergoes Successful Surgery

Posted: Oct. 13, 2009

The Phoenix Mercury today announced that All-Star guard Cappie Pondexter has undergone successful surgery on her right eye. The procedure was performed by Dr. Mandi Conway to prevent retinal detachment in the eye in the future, and was deemed necessary after a collision that occurred in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals against the Indiana Fever on Oct. 9.

“Cappie is a crucial part of our team’s championship success, which is evidenced by her performance in both the 2007 and 2009 postseasons,” said Mercury General Manager Ann Meyers Drysdale. “We wish her a speedy recovery and know that she will be back on the floor crossing people over in no time.”

The 5-8 guard was named a 2009 WNBA All-Star, her third honor in her four-year career and was also named to the 2009 All-WNBA First Team for the first time. She averaged a 2009 WNBA Finals-high 20.8 points and a team-best 5.0 assists in helping to lead the Mercury to its second league championship.

Pondexter will return to her hometown of Chicago, Illinois to recover from the surgery before heading overseas where she’ll play for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia this offseason.

The Mercury recently completed its return to the pinnacle of the WNBA as it became just the fourth team in league history to earn multiple championships. Season tickets to see the team defend its title in 2010 can be purchased now for as low as $180 at phoenixmercury.com or by calling 602.252.WNBA.
