Taylor named West Player of the Week
After leading the first-place Mercury to an undefeated 3-0 week, forward Penny Taylor earned her first career WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week award for the week ending August 12, the league announced today.
Taylor is the second Mercury player in as many weeks to win the honor following guard Diana Taurasi’s award last week. Taylor and Taurasi become the first pair of Western Conference teammates to win the award in back-to-back weeks in 2007.
A seventh-year forward from Australia, Taylor garners her first career weekly award after an undefeated week in which she led her team in scoring in each of its three victories. Taylor averaged 27.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.3 steals and shot 66 percent from the field (27-of-41), 50 percent from three-point range (6-of-12) and 92 percent from the free-throw line (22-of-24).
During the week, Phoenix set two franchise records, collecting its 21st regular season victory and improving to 10 games over .500 for the first time all-time. Two of Phoenix’s three victories this week came over conference rival Los Angeles, as the Mercury improved to a WNBA-best 15-5 (.750) against its own conference. In Phoenix’s other victory, a 97-86 triumph over the New York Liberty, Taylor scored a game-high 31 points, her team-leading fifth 30-point effort of 2007 and sixth as a member of the Mercury, second on the all-time franchise list to only Taurasi (10).
Playoff-bound for the first time in six seasons, the Western Conference-leading Mercury finish the 2007 regular season with a home-and-home set with the Sacramento Monarchs beginning Friday, August 17 at Sacramento. The Mercury return home for the regular season finale on Sunday, August 19 at US Airways Center at 4 p.m. Lower-level seats are available and can be purchased by logging onto phoenixmercury.com.
