Working Out in Style
Updated: May 6, 2004
Considering they spend a good portion of each week, not to mention each year, in the gym or on the basketball court, the stars of the Phoenix Mercury are experts when it comes to the latest in workout fashions. Well, maybe not.
MERCURY FORWARD SHEREKA WRIGHT
"It’s whatever I feel like I’ll go out with. I used to be big into wearing the high socks, but being out in 115 degree weather, you can’t do that. I’m big on headbands. I’ve worn those since the seventh grade, so I’m big on that. "
MERCURY GUARD DIANA TAURASI
"Basketball shorts. That’s what I work out in: basketball shorts and a T-shirt. I don’t get all prissied up to go work out. For golf, khaki shorts and a tank top."
MERCURY CENTER ASHLEY ROBINSON
"I really like my basketball clothes. I like my shorts, my cutoff shirt. I wear a lot of spandex, the typical workout clothes. Big shirt, cutoff sleeves, nice shorts, pretty big to give me enough space to move in. I don’t like them tight and short when I’m working out because you’ve got to nudge and pull at them. I like to have my arms out and I’ll catch a glimpse in the mirror a little bit and feel kind of buff."
MERCURY GUARD NIKKI MCCRAY
"I wear a T-shirt, shorts that are very comfortable, not very tight. Something that’s very comfortable. Comfort is the name of the game. It’s not anything that’s trying to be cute. You have to be comfortable when you’re working out.
Normally I wear a T-short underneath my tank top, but it’s so hot here, so you have to adjust to what’s going on with the weather. But I normally wear a T-shirt. I don’t like to show my arms too much."
MERCURY ASSISTANT COACH LISA HARRISON
"It really depends. If I’m lifting weights I wear basketball shorts, tennis shoes and a T-shirt. I don’t like the shorts too long because I get too hot if I have a bunch of clothes on, so I wear my Mercury shorts, and a T-shirt. If my hair is not looking too good, the bandana goes on, definitely.
"If I’m running, I like to have the least amount of clothes on that’s decent, like running short-shorts and a tank top. It’s just really hot and I want to feel as light as possible. Nothing special, no leotard. Comfort is the main consideration."
MERCURY FORWARD KAYTE CHRISTENSEN
"When I'm on my own, I wear a big T-shirt and pair of shorts to work out. I usually like to wear sleeveless T-shirts because they're less constricting. Some people wear smaller shorts, but I wear the big basketball shorts. I guess I’m not really fashionable when I’m working out. I don’t even match half the time.
"I think you should always wear what’s comfortable for you. A lot of high school kids are self conscience if their feet are too big, women especially. They wear shoes that are too small for them and it really hurts their feet. But athletes are taller and they have bigger feet than your average person. So I would just suggest you wear the right sized shoes and with clothes, wear whatever feels comfortable to you."
