WNBA Fan Enjoying Ultimate Experience

One Phoenix Mercury fan isn’t just satisfied with viewing his home team in person. He wants to take his admiration for the WNBA on the road.

Season ticket holder Alex Chambers is planning an extensive road trip, one he has dubbed “13 teams, 1 journey.” During his odyssey, Chambers is attempting to visit every WNBA stadium within almost a month.

Chambers, who is a fourth and fifth grade special education teacher at Bret Tarver Elementary School, said his journey came together initially from just planning out his summer vacation.

“It just kind of snowballed,” Chambers told PhoenixMercury.com. “I have friends who happen to live in cities with WNBA teams. And I’m a teacher so I get time off during the summer. So I figured to visit family and friends in Chicago or Seattle, and while I’m there, I’ll catch a WNBA game. I thought it would be cool to watch a game on another team’s court.

“Then when my other friends, like in Sacramento or Indiana, found out I was going to be in a state next to theirs, they invited me to come visit them and go to WNBA games there too. That’s when this whole new idea hit me.”

Chambers’ first stop will be in Detroit on June 28, which he will then begin his rounds through the Midwest, before flying down south into Atlanta, back west up the Pacific coast, another small stop in the Midwest, and finally finish up by going up the East Coast with his final game taking place in Connecticut for the WNBA All-Star Game.

It wasn’t easy for Chambers at first. There were a lot of factors to consider in the beginning.

“I started planning this last October," Chambers said. "I had to look ahead and see. Financially could I do this? Is it feasible, time-wise? Then I looked at a map and, interestingly, all the cities that have WNBA teams are in a circle, towards the coastal areas or at the northern and southern parts of the United States.”

Chambers will be racking up a ton of frequent flyer miles for his trip. Although during parts of his journey he will ride a train or rent a car, he’ll primarily be taking one-way flights from city to city.

“One thing I’m not looking forward to is all that airport security I have to go through. I’m not an airport guy. But I’ll be prepared. I’ll wear my sandals, so it’ll be easy to take them off. Gotta get your laptop out and have the three ounce containers in a baggy for carry-ons. So many rules!”

Luckily, Chambers hasn’t been forced to do all the planning and research himself. Once the WNBA found out about his trek, they helped pitch in as well.

“The WNBA has been so supportive. They’ve been a sort of HUB for me. They helped point me in the right direction, in terms of who I need to speak with, with media and getting credentials and so forth.”

Chambers will be chronicling his trip as he goes. He already has set up an account with Twitter, not to mention has his very own Facebook page. Even the WNBA website has a link to Chambers and his blogsite, www.13teams1journey.com. There, he will post videos and photos of his trip, including his interactions with every city’s fans, players and coaches.

One date especially sticks out in his mind. On July 5, he will be in Los Angeles where the Sparks will play his favorite team, the Phoenix Mercury. He says he’s gonna put his objectivism aside and cheer on his hometown team.

“With other games, I just want to sit with the fans and take in how they cheer on their home teams. But for that (Mercury vs Sparks) game, I’ll definitely be rooting for Phoenix with my Mercury jersey on. Nothing would stop me from doing that.”
