Q&A: Get to Know Erin Phillips
A team can never have too many shooters or ballhandlers.
And that’s precisely what the Mercury’s acquisition of WNBA Champion guard Erin Phillips immediately provides, along with stability in the backcourt.
But more than that, Phillips’ tenacity and toughness enhances the depth of the entire squad.

PhoenixMercury.com: First of all, welcome to Phoenix! What were your first emotions when you found out you would be a member of the Mercury?
Erin Phillips: I can't even explain what I was feeling because I was so overwhelmed with excitement. Obviously, there was a part of me that was sad because I absolutely loved my teammates and my time in Indiana, but I was also so happy to be getting the opportunity to play for Sandy and with players like Diana [Taurasi] and Penny [Taylor] who I have always looked up to.
I’m so fortunate to play for such a respected franchise and the incredible fans of the Mercury.
PhoenixMercury.com: You mentioned playing with familiar faces such as fellow Australian Penny Taylor. Have any players reached out to welcome you to Phoenix?
Phillips: Actually, Penny was one of the first people that emailed me. I have had a very limited opportunity to play with Penny and when I do I love it, so I am excited to get to play a full season with her. I have had so many welcome tweets and messages it's been overwhelming.
PhoenixMercury.com: On top of familiar faces, you’re certainly joining a very talented squad of players. What was your initial thought about joining the roster?
Phillips: I bring another blonde Australian to the franchise. [laughs]
PhoenixMercury.com: Well, more specifically, how do you see your role on the team?
I will be playing primarily at the point and also as a shooting guard from time to time. Just bringing added intensity and perimeter defense will be my
PhoenixMercury.com: You’re also accustomed with the Mercury’s coaching staff. How would you describe your relationship with another fellow Australian, Sandy Brondello?
Phillips: Sandy and I have a very special relationship. She is a great coach, a great person and she has managed to bring out the best in players. I have always said to her, "I would love to play for you some day," and here we are!
I have a huge amount of respect for her and I know she is going to do great things for the Mercury.
PhoenixMercury.com: Let’s help the X-Factor get to know you a bit through some rapid fire questions. Do you have a personal anthem or theme song?

PhoenixMercury.com: What’s your most urgent priority before joining the team?
Phillips: Going to a Mexican restaurant for fajitas and a margarita!
PhoenixMercury.com: That sounds amazing. Outside of basketball, what do you do for fun?
Phillips: If I am in Australia, I love being at the beach or on my jet ski.

PhoenixMercury.com: Training camp is a little over one month away. What do you foresee the Mercury’s playing style will be this season? Up-tempo? Slowed down and methodical?
Phillips: I definitely think it will be up-tempo but knowing Sandy there will be a big emphasis on defense as well.
PhoenixMercury.com: What are your thoughts on playing with Diana, Brittney, Candice, DeWanna, Penny and the rest of the talented squad?
Phillips: I hated playing against them, so I know I am going to love playing with them! [laughs] They are all great players; I am looking forward to getting to know them and having a fun and successful season with them.
PhoenixMercury.com: Do you have a message for the X-Factor?
Phillips: I just can't wait to meet you all! When I have played in Phoenix against the Mercury, the fans were so energetic and supportive of their team and they have a great knowledge for the game.
