Countdown to 2004 WNBA Draft -- March 9

The Phoenix Mercury will be conducting a player watch to keep fans updated on the top collegiate players who will available for the 2004 WNBA Draft. Highlighted each week will be Diana Taurasi, Alana Beard, and Nicole Powell and others who standout during the week.

Diana Taurasi and the UCONN Huskies finished the season 25-4 and went 1-1 in the Big East Tournament. UCONN beat Virginia Tech 48-34 on March 7th but then went on to lose to Boston College in the semi-finals on Monday, 73-70. Taurasi had four points, three assists and two steals in just 23 minutes of play against Virginia Tech. In the loss to Boston College, she donated 17 points, six assists and two blocks in 39 minutes on the court.

On the season, Taurasi averaged 15.5 points, 4.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds while shooting 45% from the field. The NCAA Tournament brackets will be announced on Sunday, March 13 and UCONN anxiously awaits their matchups.

Alana Beard and the Duke Blue Devils finished the season 27-3 and won the ACC Tournament this weekend in Greensboro, NC. Duke beat Wake Forest 77-59 in the first round and Beard offered nine points and eight rebounds. University of Maryland was the next opponent for the Blue Devils, however Beard and company outscored the Terrepins 70-63 in a hard fought contest. Beard led her team with 21 points and seven rebounds. On Monday, March 8th Duke defeated North Carolina for the championship of the ACC and Beard had another solid performance with 15 points, three rebounds and four assists.

On the season Beard is averaging 20.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. Duke will likely be the #1 team in the East for the NCAA Tournament.

Stanford’s Nicole Powell and her teammates finished the season 24-6 and won the PAC-10 Tournament, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Stanford took care of Cal on March 6th 80-55 and Powell had 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the winning effort. In the second round of the Tournament, Stanford just barely beat UCLA 70-66. Powell had her 19th double-double of the year with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Stanford then went on to defeat Arizona 51-46 for the championship on Monday and Powell had 24 points.
