Bonner Named Player of the Week
Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner was named the Western Conference Player of the Week, the WNBA league office announced today. It marks the second weekly honor of Bonner’s career.
The award comes after the 6-4 forward averaged 20.7 points and 10.7 rebounds during three games in four nights last week, leading all Western Conference players in scoring and finishing second in rebounding. Bonner recorded 22 points and 10 rebounds Thursday at Atlanta and 23 points and 13 rebounds yesterday at home vs. Tulsa. They marked her sixth and seventh career 20-10 performances, leaving her one shy of the franchise record (8, Jennifer Gillom).
On Friday Bonner narrowly missed making it three straight double-doubles, posting 17 points and nine rebounds at San Antonio on the second night of a back-to-back.
Named a full-time starter this season filling the spot left by Penny Taylor, who is out for the year with a torn left ACL, the three-time Sixth Woman of the Year is averaging 18.7 points and 8.0 rebounds through six games. She has already scored at least 20 points three times after doing so only five times in all of 2011.
The Mercury is currently 2-4 (.333) on the season. Phoenix next looks to avenge its home opener loss when it travels to Los Angeles Friday to take on Candace Parker and the Sparks, who currently own the second-best record in the WNBA (5-1). Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. PT.
Phoenix returns home on Friday, June 15 when it hosts the defending champion Minnesota Lynx at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available by calling 602-252-WNBA or visiting phoenixmercury.com.
