Friends Till the End
Posted: May 5, 2004
For anyone who doesn’t know Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe, this Thursday night will be just like any other TV night. But for the Mercury players, along with millions of other couch potatoes across America, they’ll be tuning into the Friends series finale. PhoenixMercury.com talked with these Friends fans about the popular sitcom going off the air and how they’ll all be heading to No. 20’s house to watch the one-hour finale.
MERCURY FORWARD KAYTE CHRISTENSEN: We have a
Friends party on Thursday night. We’re doing it pot luck style, where everyone brings their own dish. That will be interesting because we have people asking, “Can we bring forks or something?” Whether or not we have food is another story. We’re having the whole team over, so whoever wants to come, staff, boyfriends, Penny’s mother who'll be in town… we’re all making dishes, coming over to my house and there’s two hours of
Friends to watch. We missed last Thursday’s episode, but I have it on TiVo, so we’ll watch that, too. It’ll be fun.
I have been a fan for a while. I was in college when I started watching it. I have all the DVDs. In fact, Friends was one reason I got TiVo. Rachel and Ross… if they’re not together at the end, I’m going to be mad.
MERCURY GUARD NIKKI McCRAY: It was something I initiated. I think it’s always good to have a team function before the big day (of the first game). You try and develop that comraderie. I’m interested in seeing how well people can cook. We’re getting the dishes together, and we’re going to watch the series finale.
I hope Ross and Rachel get back together. You know what I think will happen? The lady is going to have the baby, Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox are going to be parents, so they’ll have the baby in their arms. Ross and Rachel are going to get together. Something will happen with Joey. I’m looking forward to it.
We have the younger group like Diana Taurasi who’s into Making the Band and The Simpsons. She doesn’t want to watch Friends. How can you not want to watch Friends? So I’m sure she’ll be there playing PlayStation or something.
MERCURY GUARD DIANA TAURASI: I don' t really like
Friends, but I'll probably watch the finale just because everyone's watching it, but I'd rather watch the
O.C. (laughs).
MERCURY FORWARD PLENETTE PIERSON: I like
Friends, but I’ve missed
Friends being overseas for the past seven months. Last year I watched it a lot, but you only get re-runs overseas. I guess I’m going to have to catch up with the finale on Thursday night. I like how everybody comes together. They have their fights, but they’re all still friends. I like Phoebe. She’s so dingy and so out there, but they all deal with her.
Kayte’s invited us all over to her house for a Friends party. It’s going to be pot-luck. We’re going to see what everybody can cook up. I can cook, but I don’t like to cook. So I’m just going to bring the vegetable tray. I’m just going to go to Sam’s Club or somewhere and buy it.
MERCURY FORWARD SHEREKA WRIGHT: I don’t watch. I’ve heard about it because my teammates at Purdue used to watch it all the time. They used to have big house gatherings and I wouldn’t go, because I’m not a big
Friends fan. I asked Kayte, “Do you have another TV? Can I watch something else?” But everybody’s talking about. I even heard Charles Barkley talking about it last night, saying he’s so glad it’s over with. So I’m with him (laughs). If there’s an NBA game on, I’ll watch that (Thursday night). If not, I might watch Lifetime.
MERCURY CENTER ASHLEY ROBINSON: I don’t really watch
Friends, but I’ll be at the party. I have to bring salad. I’ll watch the re-runs and I’m interested in seeing the series finale. It’s the end, so it’s a big show. I think all the characters are so funny, but since I haven’t watched it in depth, I don’t know which one I would relate to most. I like Rachel a lot. She’s crazy, kooky and all that stuff.
It’ll be cool to hang out with everybody, all together outside of basketball. It’s a good chance to hang out with everybody all in one place.
