The Dating Game

Relationships and dating memories are very personal and private issues that people like to keep to themselves, which is why PhoenixMercury.com asked some of your favorite Mercury players to share their stories. They were told it was just between us and them, so keep it to yourself that we are sharing these first date experiences.

MERCURY FORWARD KAYTE CHRISTENSEN

"My first date was, literally, when I was in college with Keith (current beau). Up to that point, you just knew everyone, so you just started being boyfriend-girlfriend. I’ll never forget that first date. I was so nervous. I sat in the car holding my arms. He said, ‘Are you cold?’ I said, ‘No.’ I was so nervous. We went out to a Mexican restaurant and it was fun. We’re still together, so it works."

MERCURY GUARD NIKKI MCCRAY

"I went out with a high school football player. I was a junior. I was nervous. He called and asked me out. I thought he was just playing on the phone. My cousins kind of set it up. I thought he was really sweet. We’d played basketball together so I just looked at is just hanging out with the guys. It was something different. I did dress up and took me to Houlihan’s."

MERCURY FORWARD TAMARA MOORE

"I can’t think of my first date, but on a date it’s just about being relaxed. I like a person who won’t focus on “Oh, you play in the WNBA.” And that’s all they want to talk about. I like somebody who wants to be down to earth. I want to get to know them. And they need to get to know me outside of basketball. People like to go to the movies. I’m not a movie person because you can’t talk. You can’t get to know the person because all you do is sit there. I like to go out to dinner, maybe go for a walk and get to know each other. You just vibe off each other and go from there."

MERCURY GUARD ANNA DE FORGE

It was in high school. We just went to the movies. My parents were a little strict, so I had to be home right after that. I got asked out. In high school I was told, “You have to let them ask you out.” That’s what I did. I didn’t approach anyone. They might have been older. I can’t remember. I think they were because they drove.
