2007 All-WNBA First and Second Teams Announced
Updated: Sept. 5, 2007
The 2007 All-WNBA First and Second Teams were announced by the WNBA today. Seattle Storm forward Lauren Jackson, who led all players with 243 points, was selected to the First Team for the fifth consecutive. The San Antonio Silver Stars' Becky Hammon, who joins the First Team for the first time in her career, finished second with 217 points.
Voting for the All-WNBA First and Second Teams was conducted by a panel of national sportswriters and broadcasters. Players were selected by position and received five points for each First Team vote and three points for each Second Team designation.
With her selection, Jackson ties Sheryl Swoopes of the Houston Comets for the second-most All-WNBA First Team selections. Only Los Angeles Sparks center Lisa Leslie (nine) has been voted to the First Team more often.
Rounding out the First Team are Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi (204 points), Detroit Shock forward Deanna Nolan (179 points) and Phoenix Mercury forward Penny Taylor (167 points). Taurasi joins the First Team for the third time, while Nolan is a second-time selection. Like Hammon, Taylor is a first-time selection to the All-WNBA First Team.
While leading the Storm into the playoffs, Jackson, the WNBA MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and an All-WNBA Defensive Team selection, led the league in scoring (23.8 ppg), rebounding (9.7 rpg), defensive rebounding (7.1) and double-doubles (17), while finishing second only to Margo Dydek in blocks (2.0). The Australian native also tied Taurasi's single-game scoring record when she poured in 47 at Washington on July 24. Hammon, the winner of the Dribble, Dish and Swish contest at the 2007 All-Star Game, led the league in assists (5.0 apg) in a breakout season. Taurasi and Taylor led the Mercury to first place in the Western Conference and finished third (19.2) and seventh (17.8) in scoring, respectively. While leading the Shock to the league's best record, Nolan posted career highs in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists (3.9 apg).
The 2007 All-WNBA Second Team is led by Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings (146 points). She is joined by the Connecticut Sun guard Katie Douglas (120 points), Houston Comets forward Tina Thompson (116 points), Minnesota Lynx guard Seimone Augustus (113 points) and San Antonio Silver Stars forward Sophia Young.
