Lynx Teammates Make WNBA History

Seimone Augustus and Lindsay Whalen Become First Pair of Teammates in WNBA History to Reach 3,000-Point Milestone in Same Game

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL Lynx guards Seimone Augustus and Lindsay Whalen made WNBA history last night as the Lynx saw their franchise-best nine-game winning streak end in Phoenix.

With her three-point basket at the 5:17 mark of the first quarter, eighth-year guard Lindsay Whalen surpassed the 3,000-point mark for her career. In reaching the 3,000-point milestone, Whalen becomes just the sixth player in WNBA history to amass 3,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists over a career (Tamika Catchings, Katie Smith, Diana Taurasi, Vickie Johnson and Shannon Johnson).

Sixth-year guard Seimone Augustus accomplished the same feat with her basket at the 4:43 mark of the fourth quarter. In hitting the milestone last night, Augustus tied Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi as the fastest player to score 3,000 points (151 games).

Together, Whalen and Augustus became the first pair of teammates to reach the 3000-point plateau in the same game in WNBA history. Only three other teammates have eclipsed 3,000 career points in the same year (2009 - Sue Bird and Swin Cash; 2006 - Taj McWilliams-Franklin and Margo Dydek; 2006 - Sheri Sam and Tangela Smith). Whalen and Augustus become the 35th and 36th members of the 3,000-point club.

Minnesota's loss, its second in 13 games, dropped the Lynx to 16-5, which is still the best record in the WNBA. With last night's results, the Lynx are four games up on San Antonio and Phoenix for first place in the Western Conference. After playing at the Chicago Sky on Friday, August 12, Minnesota will return home on Sunday, August 14 when it takes on the Tulsa Shock at 6 pm CT.
