Lynx Postgame Quotes: June 20, 2003

Sting 76, Lynx 72
Charlotte Coliseum

Recap | Box Score | Game Archive

Lynx Coach Suzie McConnell Serio
"We gave up too many open looks. We didn't execute well down the stretch. We waited until we were down 20 until we started stepping up. We got close, but could not come out on top in the end. It is the same story for us. We get down, catch up, get close, and don't win."

Lynx Forward Tamika Williams
"The closer games we've lost in the last minutes. We're the best comeback team in the league, but we have to finish. Charlotte's a veteran team. It's hard to come back against them. You know that Staley will hit clutch free throws, that Feaster and Stinson will hit clutch free throws. Again, we fell short. Turnovers hurt us. We had 10 or 11 turnovers in the first half, ugly ones."

Lynx Guard Shaunzinski Gortman
"I think what Coach told us was right. We wait until we're down by a lot before we get going. We have to focus on defense and pressure teams. We can't wait until we're down 20 or 30 points. We made lots of mental mistakes. We use so much energy to get back, we can't pull it out. We made a lot of mental errors too. We're not pressuring people on defense."

Sting Coach Trudi Lacey
"We lost our focus. We were up by 19. We had a couple of tough calls and they hit some threes, but that's basketball. It's a game of runs. We knew that Minnesota is a good team and they weren't going to roll over and die. We know that they can put up a lot of points quickly."

Sting Guard Dawn Staley
"Minnesota is the type of team that is very dangerous. They are very offensive-minded and have a number of players who can score. We know they have offensive threats. Once they started playing helter-skelter, they caused us to turn over the ball. When we pushed up on defense, they drove harder and got some baskets. We need to be aggressive all the time. We haven't put together 40 minutes yet. We can't rely on free throws to put points on the scoreboard. I'm just glad my free throws went in at the end."

Sting Center Tammy Sutton-Brown
"Our goal was to keep Minnesota below their scoring average. We wanted to focus on defense — especially Katie Smith. She's their go-to player. They picked up their intensity in the second half and we didn't match it. We need to concentrate on the finer points. We did get them into foul trouble. We recognized that and attacked them."

"Coach Lacey makes us focus on free throws. She talked to us about the Dallas Mavericks making something like 49 out of 50 free throws as an example to us. Free throws are obviously a big part of the game and can make you win or lose like they did for us tonight."
