Lynx Guard Lindsay Whalen Earns ESPY Nomination
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen was announced today as a nominee for the 2013 ESPYs in the category of “Best WNBA Player.” Fans can vote for Whalen online at http://espn.go.com/espys/2013 until Wednesday, July 17 at 8:00 p.m. CT.
Whalen had an outstanding year with the Lynx in 2012, leading the league in assists for the second straight season (5.4 apg) as Minnesota returned to the WNBA Finals. She was named to the All-WNBA Second Team, averaging 11.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 50.5% from the floor (9th in WNBA). Whalen was also a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic National Team, helping lead Team USA to win the gold medal in London by averaging 8.0 points and 2.4 assists per game.
Now entering her tenth WNBA season (fourth with the Lynx), Whalen became the team’s all-time leader in assists last season, entering Friday’s game with 603 dimes in a Lynx uniform. She currently ranks fourth all-time in the WNBA with 1,567 career assists, just five behind Becky Hammon for third place. A three-time All-Star and two-time All-WNBA First Team selection, Whalen holds career averages of 12.6 points, 5.1 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game.
The 2013 ESPYs presented by Capitol One, hosted by Jon Hamm, will be broadcast live on Wednesday, July 17 at 8 p.m. CT at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Calif.
