April 30, 2003 — Lynx forward Shanele Stires today announced that she is retiring from the WNBA to pursue other opportunities.

"The time has come in my life to pursue other endeavors," said Stires. "I would like to thank the WNBA, the Minnesota Lynx, the coaches, the front office personnel, the ticket sales staff, volunteers, and most importantly, my teammates and fans who have made my experience here in Minnesota truly unforgettable.

"It has been a dream come true to play in front of the greatest fans, in the greatest game. I wish nothing but the best to this league, its future and to the Lynx. I'd like Minnesota to know how dear to my heart my time here has been — both on and off the court. Thank you and I'll miss you."

Stires, 30, was drafted by the Lynx in the fourth round (56th overall) in the 2000 WNBA Draft. She appeared in 48 games (five starts) in her three-year career and finished with 98 points, 47 rebounds and 22 assists. The 5-11 forward shot 40.7% (35-for-86) from the field and 32.4% (12-for-37) from three-point range. Stires, who won over Lynx fans with her passion, hard work and enthusiasm for the game, also spent three offseasons working for the team's community relations department.

Prior to joining the Lynx, Stires played parts of three seasons in the American Basketball League, and won an ABL Championship with the Columbus Quest (1997-98). Stires also played professionally in Portugal, Sweden and Greece.

"It was a pleasure getting to know Shanele and working with her for the past three years," said Roger Griffith, Lynx chief operating officer. "I know Shanele has been thinking about this for quite some time, and that it was a difficult decision, but we wish her the best of luck. Wherever she ends up, Shanele will be successful. The fans will miss her, and we will too. Shanele is a unique person who made a great impact on the organization, and we thank her for all her contributions to Lynx basketball."
