  • July 10, 2002 — The WNBA announced that Lynx forward Katie Smith has been selected a reserve for the 2002 Western Conference All-Star Team. This is the third consecutive season that Smith has been chosen by Western Conference coaches to participate in the WNBA All-Star Game.

Smith's 17.6 ppg leads the Lynx and ranks fourth in the WNBA. She is shooting 41.9% from the field and 40.0% from beyond the three-point arc, and her 38.1 mpg rank second in the league. Earlier this season, the 5-11 forward surpassed Cynthia Cooper to become the WNBA's all-time leader in three-point field goals.

Smith, who has been selected as a reserve the past three years, earned a starting assignment in the 2000 WNBA All-Star Game due to an injury to Cynthia Cooper. This is the fourth consecutive season that the Lynx have had at least one player appear in the WNBA All-Star Game: Tonya Edwards (1999), Smith and Betty Lennox (2000), Smith (2001), Smith (2002).

The 2002 WNBA All-Star Game will be hosted by the Washington Mystics and the District of Columbia on Monday, July 15 at the MCI Center and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
