Smith Sets WNBA Three-Point Record

Smith

June 4, 2002 — In Tuesday night's overtime loss to Seattle, Lynx forward Katie Smith broke the WNBA all-time record for three-point field goals. Smith sank three shots from beyond the three-point arc to eclipse Cynthia Cooper's previous record of 232 three-pointers.

Smith, who has 233 three-pointers in her four-year WNBA career, sank the record-breaking shot with 12:07 remaining in the second half. She broke the record in her 97th WNBA game, 23 fewer games than it took Cooper to reach the milestone. During the 2000 WNBA season, Smith set the league's single-season record for three-point field goals with 88.

Prior to joining the WNBA, Smith connected on 185 three-pointers while playing three seasons with the Columbus Quest of the American Basketball League. She has made 418 three-point field goals in her seven-year professional career.

In 2001, Smith set seven single-season WNBA records, including highest scoring average (23.1 ppg) and most points scored (739). The former Ohio State standout also established a single-game league scoring record with 46 points at Los Angeles on July 8, 2001.
