Smith Is Fastest WNBA Player To 3,000 Points

June 11, 2004 — Lynx guard Katie Smith reached the 3,000-point plateau in Minnesota's 55-69 loss at Los Angeles. Smith, who tallied 18 points and now has 3,012 points in her WNBA career, achieved the milestone with an 18' jump shot with 14:13 remaining in the first half. Smith reached the mark in 167 games, faster than the three other players already in the 3,000-career-point circle (Lisa Leslie 172 games, Tina Thompson 195, Andrea Stinson 211).

The 5-11 guard is the all-time leading scorer in the history of women's professional basketball (ABL/WNBA) with 4,443 points. She scored 1,431 points in two-plus seasons with the Columbus Quest of the ABL.

Earlier this season, Smith moved past Jennifer Gillom into fourth place on the WNBA's all-time scoring list. A four-time All Star and four-time All-WNBA performer, Smith is a member of the U.S. Women's Basketball Team that will compete in the 2004 Olympics in Greece.
