May 5, 2003 The Lynx today announced the team has signed forward Sheri Sam. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. The signing of Sam increases Minnesota's 2003 training camp roster to 16.

The Lynx selected Sam, 29, second overall in the 2003 WNBA Dispersal Draft. A four-year WNBA veteran, Sam played the last three seasons with the Miami Sol. The 6-0 forward finished as Miami's all-time leader in 14 categories, including points (1,303), scoring average (13.7 ppg), FGM (518), 3-FGM (88), rebounds (424) and minutes (3,077). In 2002, Sam earned her first WNBA All-Star selection after leading the Sol in scoring (14.5 ppg) rebounds (4.8 rpg), steals (2.16 spg) and minutes played (33.5 mpg). Originally drafted in the second round (20th overall) by the Orlando Miracle in the 1999 WNBA Draft, Sam has averaged 13.1 ppg and 4.5 rpg in 127 games in her WNBA career.

Prior to joining the WNBA, Sam played three seasons in the American Basketball League with the San Jose Lasers. A two-time starter in the ABL All-Star Game, Sam averaged 14.3 ppg and 6.2 rpg in 97 ABL games. Sam ranks in the all-time top 10 in the history of U.S. women's professional basketball (ABL/WNBA) in the following categories: points (3,055, sixth), rebounds (1,173, ninth) and steals (389, fourth).

The Lynx tip off the 2003 preseason schedule Tuesday, as the team hosts the Detroit Shock at Target Center beginning at noon. On Friday (May 9), the Lynx will play the Washington Mystics in a preseason contest at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn. beginning at 7:00 p.m.
