The Lynx finally practiced again on Tuesday after a stretch where the team saw nearly two weeks without a scheduled practice.

The most interesting line of the day? A fresh face on the team in guard Nadirah McKenith.

McKenith will be taking the roster spot of Lindsey Moore, who the team waived on Tuesday. Coach Cheryl Reeve says the team is excited about what McKenith can add to the team, even though she’s coming in in the heart of the season.

“We were looking for some help at the point guard spot to kind of jump start our second team,” Reeve said after practice. “The overall health of the second group is kind of what prompted this move.”

Reeve said in more ideal circumstances, the team would have looked to Monica Wright or Tan White to step into the role, but with Wright and Devereaux Peters still working to comeback from knee surgeries, it was important that they don’t focus on too much too soon.

McKenith was taken with the 17th pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics. She played 32 games for the Mystics last season, averaging nearly nine minutes a game, 2.8 points and 1.1 rebounds.

She played half of a season overseas in Spain, and since has been working out near her New Jersey home, trying to keep in shape in the hopes that a WNBA team would come calling.

“I was kind of surprised to get a call from the defending champs,” McKenith said. “But you never know, you always have to be ready.” McKenith worked out with the second team today, and the squad was given a little extra time on the floor to help her get acclimated to the group.

Fellow point guard Lindsay Whalen said that after seeing McKenith’s effort in practice today, she’s excited to work with her for the rest of this season.

“I’ve only seen her today, and I’ll get to know her more and more as the days go along,” Whalen said. “I think she’s coming off aggressive, looking to score, looking to get people involved and looking to make plays. She’s a young kid with a lot of energy and she’ll bring a positive attitude and a positive spirit to the team.” McKenith will get her first look at a game in a Lynx uniform on Friday night as Minnesota travels to Seattle to face the Storm.

Quick Hits

  • Rebekkah Brunson did her first running in practice today, as she continues to rehab from her knee surgery this Spring. The running was on a machine designed to simulate impact and take gravity pressure off her running motion, so that she wouldn’t be back on the hard court on Day 1. But Reeve said it was an encouraging sign.

  • Seimone Augustus did not participate in much of practice today as tries to rest her leg that is suffering from bursitis in her knee.

  • Everyone on the team was happy to be home for a few days this week and to be back at practice. Reeve said she has never seen this group so energetic in the first hour of a workout.
