Ignoring the 29 games that have already been played this season may be difficult for the Lynx and Silver Stars. However, both teams are now entrenched in a head-to-head battle for the final spot in the playoffs with only five games remaining in the season. San Antonio and Minnesota are deadlocked with 12-17 records but the Silver Stars hold the all-important tiebreaker.
San Antonio showed signs of life in its last outing against Detroit by pounding the Shock in overtime 21-9 and securing an eventual 100-88 victory. Becky Hammon and Sophia Young combined for 63 points in the win to help the Silver Stars build some momentum heading into the matchup against the Lynx tonight.
On the flip side, Minnesota failed to string together back-to-back wins with an 81-75 loss to Washington on Sunday. The Lynx closed the gap to just four points after the Mystics built a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter. Charde Houston led Minnesota with 20 points in the losing effort.
The final matchup of the season series offers an opportunity for the Lynx to even the set at 2-2. On July 10, Minnesota hosted the first contest and fell to San Antonio 77-61 as the Lynx only shot 34.4 percent from the floor. Just two days later, Minnesota bounced back behind Houston's 26 points and Hodges chipped in 21 to help lift the Lynx to a 83-76 win in San Antonio. The third game featured a narrow two-point victory for the Silver Stars. Hammon once again played a pivotal role for San Antonio with 22 points on August 9. Minnesota fell in a valiant effort as the team shot 51.5 percent from the floor while four starters reached double-figures in points, including 24 from Nicky Anosike.
Countless times during the year, Minnesota has displayed extreme resiliency in dealing with a coaching change before the season opener and losing its MVP-caliber guard Seimone Augustus. Regardless of the issues that have plagued this team, they are in a position to control their own destiny. San Antonio is 8-6 at home but only 3-7 in its last 10 games. With the Silver Stars facing back-to-back games against the red-hot Sparks this week, Minnesota must capitalize on an opportunity to gain ground in the West.
