ROAD RULES!:

Certainly nice to pick up a couple of big road wins for the team! I will say it over and over, winning in hostile territory is difficult! The first stop on the road was a rematch of the 2012 WNBA Finals. How do you win on the road? Don’t allow the defending champs to get an offensive rebound in the first half, hold them to 34.4% shooting for the game, and dominate in the paint 34-24. The Lynx beat Indy 69-62 and it was a terrific way to kick off the road trip.

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM:

On to Oklahoma where the Lynx faced the Tulsa Shock. The Lynx have done an excellent job of not overlooking the Shock, who are still trying to find their identity. We have beat Tulsa three times this season 83-74, 88-79, and 86-75. In all three games the Lynx won the battle of the boards and shot 50% or better.

MONICA MADNESS:

Monica Wright has always done what the coaches have asked of her. She is the spark off the bench as the 6th player. She plays whatever position is needed in any particular game. When Seimone went down with her ankle injury Monica was asked to move into the starting lineup. Not surprisingly she is thriving there. In the three games that she has started she has logged one hundred minutes of play and 50 points. All three of those games were wins for the Lynx and two were on the road. I chatted with Monica at practice about being able to accommodate any role that the coaches ask of her and how she prepares for that. “I just need to be ready for anything, preparing yourself right here on the practice court for all situations. Anything can happen in a game so you just have to be ready,” said Wright. Her versatility and willingness to do what is asked of her is an important part of the team’s chemistry.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME?:

Sometimes when watching a Lynx practice you realize that most players are not called by their given names. Every once in awhile I have to ask someone in the know, “what do they call her?” So I thought it would be best to decode all of the nicknames to make sure we are all clear on this matter. Lindsay Whalen helped me through the list.

Maya Moore - My-My (or Myra)

Lindsey Moore - Elmo

Lindsay Whalen - Whay or Weezy

Seimone Augustus - Money-Mone

Sugar Rodgers - she has a nickname ready, but Sugh is another option

Monica Wright - Monnie

Devereaux Peters - Dev

Amber Harris - Am

Rachel Jarry - Rach

Rebekkah Brunson - “B”

Janel McCarville - J-Mac

INJURY REPORT:

Seimone is working her way back from her ankle injury sustained on July 7th and hopefully will play against San Antonio on Friday. As we head toward the All-Star break, you are starting to see more and more injured players across the WNBA. The San Antonio Silver Stars have lost both Sophia Young and Becky Hammon for the season with knee injuries. The Silver Stars are on a three game losing streak and have only four wins on the season. However, any team coached by Dan Hughes will play hard and cannot be dismissed. Lynx must stay focused and as they do the Texas Two-Step to pick up their fifth win in a row. Stay away from the bar-b-que ladies and bring home a couple more road wins!
