Wright, Augustus Lead Reading Timeout

Lynx guard Monica Wright admits she wasn’t an avid reader when she was young. But as she got older, she realized just how important it is to make sure she gets a healthy dose of reading in each day.

On Thursday, she helped convey that message to area children.

Wright and teammate Seimone Augustus visited Bethune Community School in Minneapolis and read the book, “Dream Big,” by Michael Jordan to approximately 50 fifth graders. As part of the team’s Read To Achieve program, the Lynx hope to reach out to children each season and help them develop a love for reading.

The two Lynx standouts read the book, then handed out prizes and posters during a Q&A session. Lynx Radio Host John Focke led the event.

“After learning so much from reading and knowing how much I’m missing out on from not reading, you use it every single day in life,” Wright said. “Reading is something you can’t live without, and it’ just imperative in being a responsible adult.”

Augustus said when she was growing up, she didn’t have the opportunity to have professional athletes come by her school and talk to her about her education. She takes that responsibility very seriously, and she said she hopes their trip to Bethune makes a difference in these kids’ lives moving forward.

“It’s great to be able to give back to the community and those kids,” Augustus said. “By the looks on their faces, they had a lot of fun.”

The reading timeout is part of Lynx Cares Season Kickoff and WNBA Cares Week. During Lynx Cares Season Kickoff, the Lynx will highlight the organization's continued commitment to the community through programs which focus on education, youth, family development, health and wellness all around the Twin Cities.

Wright said she enjoys giving back, because the community gives her and her teammates so much support.

“Minneapolis supports us so much during the Lynx season,” Wright said. “It’s just fun to get out here and give kids some encouragement.”
