Lynx Keep Streaks Intact In Tulsa

Tulsa Shock coach Gary Kloppenburg didn’t hide his thoughts about the Minnesota Lynx after his Shock lost 93-73 in Tulsa on Saturday night.

“That’s the best team we’ve seen. I mean they’re all very skilled, their bigs rebound hard and they don’t really have any weaknesses,” he said. “That second group in there could probably make the playoffs, their second five.”

The winless Shock put up a fight on their home court but couldn’t hang with the deep, talented and unbeaten Lynx in the long run, as Minnesota put together a 15-3 run in the third quarter that turned a two-point halftime lead into a comfortable cushion.

The Lynx extended their franchise-best star to 9-0, which ties the 2001 and 2003 Los Angeles Sparks for the WNBA record for victories to start the season. The Sparks reached the WNBA Finals in both of those seasons, winning it in 2001 and losing to the Detroit Shock in 2003.

In the process, the Lynx kept a collection of streaks intact:

  • The Lynx have now won 12 straight regular season games dating back to their loss to the New York Liberty on Sept. 2, 2011. The Lynx have also won nine consecutive road games, which is the third longest road winning streak in WNBA history. Los Angeles won 12 straight in 2000. Their last loss away from Target Center was Aug. 16, 2011 against Connecticut.


  • According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Minnesota now holds the WNBA record for most consecutive games shooting 50 percent or better from the field. The Lynx did it for the fifth consecutive game on Saturday in Tulsa, shooting 56.7 percent from the floor. Four other teams have shot 50 percent or better four times in a row (Phoenix – 2010; Connecticut – 2006; Connecticut – 2005; Charlotte – 1999). Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen was also on both Connecticut teams. The rest of the WNBA has four total games shooting 50 percent or better.


  • The Lynx had five players score in double figures against Tulsa on Saturday, marking the second straight game in which that many players reached double digits. Maya Moore had 26 points, Monica Wright had 18 points, Rebekkah Brunson had 15 points, Taj McWilliams-Franklin had 11 points and Candice Wiggins had 11 points.


    • The return home today and will not play again until Friday, when they head to Phoenix to take on the Mercury in the desert. The Lynx opened up the 2012 campaign with a 105-83 win over the Mercury at Target Center on the day the team raised their championship banner to the rafters and accepted their 2011 championship rings.

    In the meantime, the Lynx will look to use their five days off to rest, practice and get healthy. Shooting guard Seimone Augustus has missed the last two games with a strained right quadriceps. Wright has filled in for Augustus in the starting lineup during those two games, shooting a combined 9-of-16 and scoring 24 points during that span.
