Wiggins Named EuroCup Player of the Year
Fresh off leading Greek club Sony Athinaikos to the EuroCup Championship, Lynx guard Candice Wiggins was named EuroBasket's EuroCup Player of the Year on Sunday. For her efforts, Wiggins was also named Guard of the Year and Import of the Year, in addition to being named to the EuroCup First Team.
In 16 EuroCup games, the 5-11 guard totaled averages of 15.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Wiggins shot .439 percent from the floor, including .375 percent from three-point distance. Wiggins finished amongst the top 20 in six different statistical categories, including free-throw percentage (6th, 85.0 percent), three-point field goals made (13th, 2.1), steals per game (14th, 2.1 spg) and points per game (14th, 15.1 ppg). Wiggins paced Sony Athinaikos in total points (242), steals (34), minutes played (470) and was second in assists (41). Over the course of the season, Wiggins tallied at least 25 points on three different occasions, and made at least two three-point shots nine different times, and three or more seven times.
Wiggins averaged 9.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game in the two-game, total-point EuroCup Final series against Russian side Nadezhda, which Athinaikos claimed 118-110 on aggregate. Wiggins tallied 10 points, three rebounds and three steals in the championship-clinching contest on Thursday, April 8. In winning the coveted EuroCup crown, Sony Athinaikos became the first-ever Greek team to accomplish that feat.
In 19 games in the Greek League, Wiggins averaging 14.1 points per game while hitting on 46.3 percent of her three-point attempts. She led Athinaikos to an undefeated record and the league crown. Wiggins and company also captured the Greek Cup over the weekend, defeating FEA, 87-39. Wiggins scored six points.
