Vote Renee Montgomery for Sportswoman of the Year


Lynx rookie guard Renee Montgomery was named one of 10 finalists for the Women's Sports Foundation's Sportswoman of the Year award. Fan have the opportunity to vote for Montgomery by logging onto the Women's Sports Foundation's Web site.

Previous winners of the award include Lisa Leslie (2003, 2001), Sue Bird (2002), Cynthia Cooper (1998) and former Lynx player Teresa Edwards (1996).

The nominees for this year's award include international and collegiate athletes from a variety of sports including soccer, softball, lacrosse, tennis, bowling and curling. Notable nominees include Brazilian soccer player Marta Vieira da Silva, Washington softball pitcher Danielle Lawrie, Wisconsin hockey player Jessie Vetter and Northwestern lacrosse player Hannah Nielsen.

Montgomery helped lead Connecticut to a perfect 39-0 season and a national championship with 16.5 points and 5.1 assists per game. She became one of three players in Connecticut history to 1,500 points and 500 assists in the school's history. Montgomery received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award and was named to the AP All-American First Team earlier this year.

She was drafted by the Lynx with the fourth pick in the WNBA Draft. She has played in all 20 games, earning a spot in the starting lineup the past five games. Montgomery has averaged 7.9 points and 1.9 assists per game in her rookie season so far.

The award winner will be announced and honored at the Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner on October 13 in New York. Voting is open for the award until August 9.
