Dear Slam Bash Guests,

I am incredibly privileged to be a professional athlete. I have been playing basketball since I was 3 years old. I learned the game of basketball from my father, Seymore, and worked hard at developing my skills behind our home in Baton Rouge, La.

My father gave me the tools that I needed to succeed. He taught me to dribble the ball blindfolded. He taught me how to shoot the ball witheither hand by tying the other around my waist. He also created several training tools, including something that he made using a bowling glove that taught me the proper follow-through after I released the ball.

I owe a great deal of my success to my father. However, if not for the women who came before me, I wouldn't be an all-star in the WNBA today. National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrates those women who have paved the way for the superstars of today. Cheryl Miller, Teresa Edwards, Nancy Lieberman, Anne Donovan, Ann Meyers, and many others have made it possible for the WNBA to exist and strive 11 years after its formation in 1997. National Girls and Women in Sports Day pays tribute to their accomplishments, and it honors those women who have made it possible for the girls of today to compete in all sports from the youth leagues all the way to the pros.

The Minnesota Lynx are celebrating their 10th Anniversary in 2008, the 10th WNBA franchise to reach that milestone. Our Slam Bash gala event celebrates that accomplishment. However, without Title IX and without days like National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we would not be here today to hold that celebration.

I am very proud to be a member of the Minnesota Lynx today, a day when we honor 10 amazing men and women who have contributed to women's sports and celebrate the accomplishments and sacrifices of all those who made this day possible.

Thank you for joining the Minnesota Lynx for our Slam Bash celebration. I hope to see you in the stands this summer at Target Center to help us celebrate our 10 seasons in the WNBA.
