Scouting Report
The Lynx have little time to enjoy the season opening victory over the Chicago Sky on Saturday night. After dominating Chicago 102-85, Minnesota heads to Indiana for the first road contest of the season. Two weeks ago, the Fever defeated the Lynx 68-51 in the only preseason game of the year.
Indiana is a veteran-laden squad with four consecutive appearances in the WNBA playoffs. The Fever might feel the effects of a double overtime defeat at Atlanta on Saturday night as they host Minnesota in the home opener on Sunday. With a chance to snag the win at the buzzer, five-time All-Star Tamika Catchings missed a jumper and Indiana dropped to 0-1 to start the 09’ campaign.
In the Fever backcourt, Katie Douglas returns at the point guard spot. Douglas led Indiana with 22 points on 7-for-16 shooting in over 47 minutes of court time on Saturday. Kelly Miller and rookie Renee Montgomery will split time at the point guard position to present a strong attack for the Lynx. Montgomery jumped off the bench with nine points, four assists, and zero turnovers in the win over Chicago. In order to string together back-to-back victories, Minnesota will rely on the direction and defense of its point guards.
Catchings is looking to rebound after a poor 5-for-18 shooting performance on Saturday. The Indiana frontcourt also features newly acquired center Yolanda Griffith in the starting lineup. Griffith is a former MVP and anchors a defense that only allowed 72 points per game last season. Seimone Augustus was again brilliant for the Lynx frontline against Chicago. The forward led all scorers with 23 points while the team played exceptional trap defense on Sky center Sylvia Fowles. A similar type of defensive performance from the Minnesota frontcourt will be needed on Sunday night.
Minnesota searches for three consecutive regular season victories over Indiana with tipoff set for 6 PM.
