The "33 Days of Augustus," a wide-ranging community outreach plan featuring nearly 40 events and a host of media appearances by Lynx players and staff throughout the 33-day Olympic break, began on Monday when Minnesota forward Nicky Anosike took part in the 22nd-annual "Create A Memory Day" at the Metrodome.
Founded by Ron Zamansky, "Create A Memory Day" is an annual sports-related activity for underprivileged youth in the Twin Cities. This year Anosike headlined the event, which hosted more than 450 kids. Anosike, winner of back-to-back national championships at the University of Tennessee, spoke to the group of children about her success on the court, but emphasized to the youth how important it was for her to leave Knoxville with a degree.
Also on Monday night, members of the Lynx staff participated in the "Cook For Kids" at the Ronald McDonald House. Minnesota staff cooked and served food, then had dinner with the children and families from the Ronald McDonald House at 818 Fulton Street SE in Minneapolis.
Tonight Anosike will represent the Lynx in two more events. At 5 p.m., she will help run a basketball tournament at Gospel Hill Camp, then talk to the children about education and life choices.
From 7-8 p.m., Anosike will partake in the "National Night Out" at the Minneapolis Grand. The annual event, which promotes building a healthier, safer community, aims at generating support for anti-crime program and to strengthen police/community relations.
The "33 Days of Augustus" program continues on Wednesday with the "Timberwolves Shoot-Out" during the Lake Hiawatha Festival at Hiawatha Regional Park in Minneapolis. Stay tuned to Lynxbasketball.com for event updates.
