The Lynx opened the month of June with back-to-back victories at Target Center. The consecutive wins boosted the Lynx' record above .500 (4-3) for the first time in 2004.
A 55-47 win vs. the Silver Stars on June 3 avenged the earlier loss in San Antonio. The Lynx held the Silver Stars to 25.9% (15-for-58) shooting from the field, the top defensive performance in franchise history, while San Antonio's 47 points represented the team's second-lowest total ever. Center Michele Van Gorp came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points; four of her top six career scoring nights have been against the Utah/San Antonio franchise. With a 76-68 win over Phoenix two nights later, the Lynx wrapped up their homestand with a 3-1 record. Forward Tamika Williams was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, the only time in franchise history a player had been perfect from the field with more than four shot attempts. Williams finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Lynx made up a 14-point deficit for the win, at the time the second-biggest comeback in team history and a preview of a July matchup between the teams. After a five-day layoff, Minnesota traveled to Los Angeles and was upended by the Sparks, 69-55. In the game, Katie Smith joined the WNBA record books once again as she became the fastest player (and fourth overall) to reach 3,000 career points. A 60-50 home loss to Sacramento followed on June 17, and Minnesota fell under .500 again at 4-5. Minnesota led by one after a Smith three-pointer at the 3:30 mark of the second half, but the Monarchs outscored the Lynx 14-3 to end the game. The Lynx rebounded two nights later with a 66-58 victory against the Houston Comets at Target Center, only the franchise's second-ever win vs. Houston. Smith contributed a solid all-around outing with a game-high 22 points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists. A two-game road trip to Phoenix and San Antonio resulted in back-to-back losses, with the Lynx falling 69-46 to the Mercury and 70-57 to the Silver Stars, and a return to Target Center ended in an 83-67 Los Angeles win, the Sparks' 18th consecutive over the Lynx in the regular season. But that was to be the last time the Lynx lost more than two games in a row in 2004. Three games under .500, Minnesota once again rebounded with a win over Houston, 58-50 in overtime on June 30. The Lynx trailed by eight points with two minutes remaining before rallying with an 8-0 run that was capped off by a Smith layup with 5.8 seconds left to force overtime. Minnesota held the Comets scoreless in the extra session, just the second time in WNBA history a team has been shut out in OT. Smith topped all scorers with 23 points and held Houston all-star Sheryl Swoopes to nine points on 4-for-14 shooting. With a 4-5 mark in June, the Lynx' record at the end of of the month was 6-8. |
