Lynx Foundation to Make Donation in Katie Smith’s Name
July 16, 2005
Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Lynx today announced that in honor of guard Katie Smith becoming the first U.S. women’s professional basketball player to score 5,000 career points, the Lynx Foundation will make a $5,000 donation in Smith’s name to the Fairview Southdale Breast Center.
“On behalf of the Lynx foundation, I’m proud to donate to such great organization that is addressing a very important cause,” said Smith. “Breast health awareness has always been a major focus of the team and the WNBA, and one that I’m passionate about. I’m pleased that the Lynx organization is recognizing my accomplishment by giving back to the community.”
Smith will present the $5,000 check to Dr. Barbara Bowers of Fairview Southdale Breast Center in an on-court presentation prior to Sunday’s Lynx game (approximately 4:40 p.m).
Since joining the WNBA in 1999, the Lynx have raised more than $500,000 for breast cancer research in Minnesota. The team’s marquee event for raising money has been the U.S. Bank Great Basketball Dribble. The seventh annual event will take place following the Lynx’ game on Sunday, Aug. 7 (tipoff at 5:00 p.m.). The 2.5-mile walk takes participants through the streets of downtown Minneapolis and starts and ends at Target Center.
Bowers brought her practice to Fairview Southdale Breast Center in 2004. Along with Breast center consultant Dr. David Scott, Bowers has created three major initiatives for the center: research, genetic counseling and expanded care for high-risk patients.
