Houston, Anosike Continue "33 Days of Augustus"

by contributing writer Aaron Seehusen

Lynx forwards Nicky Anosike and Charde Houston continued to hit the community trails, this time making stops at Brooklyn Center and Blake High Schools.

Through the first three days of the "33 Days of Augustus" it was Nicky Anosike who shouldered the load of community appearances, making stops at various youth camps, the Metrodome and the Timberwolves Shoot-Out. Anosike's teammate and fellow rookie Charde Houston got into the act Thursday, when she traveled to Brooklyn Center High School to assist with the Protect The E.D.G.E Basketball Camp.

Hosted by former Grambling State star Quadree Drakeford, the Protect The E.D.G.E. Basketball Camp offers youth ages 8-14 the chance to improve their basketball skills while learning the importance of the Excel, Dreams, Goals, and Education as they pertain to success in life.

In addition to developing some skills on the court, Houston was pleased to reinforce the importance of the E.D.G.E. principles to the audience by sharing personal stories on how these philosophies played an important role in her road to the WNBA.

Not to be outdone, Anosike continued her community work Thursday night, making an appearance at Blake High School. There she spoke to kids from the Cornerstone, a Student of Color Alliance program about her similar experiences growing up as a minority student in private schools. She then touched on facing adversity, overcoming struggles to becoming successful in life.

Cornerstone, a Student of Color Alliance, is a program for students of color that aims to improve the experience and increase the retention of culturally diverse students at Blake.

Anosike's stop at Cornerstone will continue into Friday as she hosts the program's end-of-summer barbeque.

Fans can also look for the Lynx at this weekend's 20th-Annual Hoop it Up 3-on-3 Tournament at Dunwoody College in Minneapolis.
